Moving to a new home is an exciting adventure, but it can also be stressful without a plan in place. Between packing, coordinating movers, and settling into your new environment, there’s a lot to manage. That’s where a moving checklist comes in handy!
Hi, I’m Rozi Dover, and as a local real estate expert, I’ve helped many people make smooth transitions to Auburn and Opelika. In this blog, I’m sharing a step-by-step moving checklist designed to help you stay organized and stress-free during the big move.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day: Plan and Organize

The earlier you start planning, the better. This is the time to focus on logistics, research, and getting everything in order.

1. Start Decluttering
Before packing, go through each room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or throw away. Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter and ensure you’re not bringing unnecessary items into your new home.  If it does not bring you joy, give it to someone else who will enjoy it.

2. Research Moving Companies
Contact several moving companies in Auburn or Opelika to compare prices and services. If you’re planning to rent a moving truck and handle the move yourself, start looking into rental options. Sometimes it is more cost effective to have a moving company load you onto a truck you rent then have a local company at your destination unload you.

3. Create a Moving Binder
A moving binder helps you stay organized. Use it to store important documents like contracts with movers, receipts, and your moving checklist. Keep all the paperwork related to your new home, like utility setups, in one place.

4. Notify Schools
If anyone in your household is changing schools, notify the current school about the move. Gather academic records, and start the enrollment process for schools in Auburn or Opelika. You’ll want to handle this early to ensure everything is ready for the new school year.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day: Handle Essentials and Begin Packing

With the move date approaching, it’s time to start tackling important tasks and light packing.

5. Notify Utility Providers
Set up the transfer of utilities (water, gas, electricity, internet, etc.) from your current home to your new home in Auburn or Opelika. Make sure utilities are scheduled to be connected before you arrive at your new home.

6. Pack Non-Essential Items
Start packing items you don’t use daily, like seasonal clothing, books, and decor. Label each box with the room it belongs to so unpacking is easier.

7. Gather Important Documents
Make sure you have easy access to important documents like medical records, identification, and insurance policies. Ask your lender what documents they may need last minute too.  Keep these with you during the move rather than packing them in boxes.

8. Plan a Garage Sale or Donation
For items you no longer need, consider hosting a garage sale or donating them to a local charity. This helps lighten your load and provides a fresh start in your new home.

3 Weeks Before Moving Day: Finalize Details and Deep Clean

With a few weeks left before the big move, it’s time to wrap up details and start preparing your current home for the transition.

9. Confirm Moving Plans
If you hired professional movers, confirm the details, such as the date, time, and any special instructions. If you’re doing it yourself, finalize truck rental or arrangements for friends and family who will help.

10. Change Your Address
Submit a change of address form with the US Postal Service. Notify banks, subscription services, your employer, and any other important contacts about your move.

11. Deep Clean Your Home
Give your current home a deep clean, especially if you’re selling it or moving out of a rental. This is a good time to clean out storage spaces like attics, basements, and sheds.  It’s also a good idea to hire a cleaning service to come clean after everything is out.  You will be tired and ready to hit the road.

12. Prepare for the Transition
If possible, visit parks or attractions in Auburn or Opelika and familiarize yourself with the area. This can help make the adjustment to your new surroundings easier.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day: Final Preparations

Now’s the time to get everything in order and ensure nothing is overlooked.

13. Pack Essential Items
Pack a “first night” box with essentials you’ll need when you arrive. Include items like toiletries, snacks, a change of clothes, and bedding.

14. Plan Your Meals
To avoid the hassle of cooking or eating out frequently, plan simple meals or consider meal delivery for the days surrounding the move. It’s also a great time to clear out the fridge and pantry!

15. Double-Check Your Moving Details
Reach out to your moving company or helpers to reconfirm the schedule and ensure everything is ready for moving day. Make sure you have enough packing supplies and that larger items (like furniture) are properly labeled.

16. Transfer Medical Prescriptions
Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy near your new home and schedule any last-minute medical appointments before the move.

Moving Week: The Final Countdown

It’s almost time to move! This week, focus on packing the last of your belongings and preparing for the move.

17. Finish Packing
By now, the majority of your home should be packed. Focus on packing the remaining items, like kitchen utensils, daily essentials, and electronics.

18. Do a Final Walkthrough
Walk through your home to ensure nothing is left behind. Check closets, cabinets, dishwasher and storage areas (like attic and above the refrigerator)  for items that might have been overlooked.

19. Prepare Your Pets
If you have pets, make arrangements for their care during the move. You might want to keep them with a friend or family member on moving day to avoid added stress.

Moving Day: Time to Make the Move!

It’s moving day! Here’s how to ensure everything goes smoothly.

20. Communicate with Movers
When the movers arrive, walk them through your home and provide any last-minute instructions. Make sure they know which boxes contain fragile items.

21. Do a Final Sweep of the House
Once everything is packed into the truck, do a final check of each room to ensure nothing is left behind. Double-check storage spaces, closets, and the garage.

23. Keys and Garage Remotes
Make sure to leave keys for the cleaners to do the final clean after everything is out.  Remember to leave all the keys (including neighborhood pool keys) and garage door openers behind.

22. Head to Your New Home
Once you arrive at your new home in Auburn or Opelika, unpack your essential items first. Focus on setting up your space in a way that feels comfortable.
